New York University 부설 어학원 American Language Institute(ALI)는 1945년에 설립되어 우수한 어학연수생 지도 방법과 엄격한 교육방침아래 생활 영어실력향상과 대학 진학 준비를 위해 세계 각국으로부터 매 학기 마다 수많은 연수생이 ALI에 등록하고 있습니다. ALI는 영어의 지도, 평가, 미국의 다문화 사회의 적응지도를 포함한 상담을 제공하는 질 높은 종합 프로그램이며 학생들에게 세세한 강의을 하고 있습니다. 영어가 모국어가 아닌 대학생을 보조하기 위한 기관으로써 만들어 졌으나 현재는 커리어나 직업 상의 이유로 영어를 배우는 비지니스맨, 또는 일반적인 어학력 습득을 목표하는 유학생을 위한 폭넓은 커리큘럼을 제공하는 미국을 대표하는 도시형 대학 영어 프로그램입니다.
영어연수과정
* Intensive Program in American English and Cultural Orientation:
20-hour-per week programfor students who wish to learn english in the shortest possible timeframe. Professionals and business people who want to improve their English for career advancement also enroll in the Intensive Program. During the fall and spring semesters, classes meet for 14 weeks. During the summer, there are two separate six-week sessions.
* Advanced Workshop Program:
The Advanced Workshop Program is for students who have a solid command of English, but who seek additional preparation in academic English in order to pursue a degree or specialized studies. Qualified students may supplement these work-shops with additional courses in approved NYU-SCPS programs.
* English for Special Purposes:
Also for advanced students, there are English for Special Purposes courses that can be taken in conjunction with the Advanced Workshop Program. Courses for special purposes are designed for those who wish to focus on particular kinds of English study such as accent correction, advanced oral communication, and business English.
* Assessment of English Language Proficiency:
Students accepted by other universities may wish to study English fulltime at the ALI before beginning their academic programs.
In this case, they apply for the I-20 form for English study only. At a student's written request, an English Language Report (the American Language Institute's official statement of an individual's English proficiency) will be sent to a school, an organization, or a sponsoring agency.
* Cultural Orientation Programs:
ALI runs short summer seminars that provide cultural orientation and create opportunities for practicing English in New York City.
These programs are designed for supervised groups of 10 or more adult students. Individual applications are not accepted for these programs.
